Barclays CEO resigns after investigation into connection with Jeffrey Epstein

British bank Barclays chief executive Jes Staley will step down immediately after the conclusion of an investigation by British regulators into his relationship with financier Jeffrey Epstein, the bank said on Monday.

The investigation by the Bank of England’s Financial Conduct Authority and Prudential Regulatory Authority was released by Barclays in early 2020 and focused on how Staley had characterized the relationship with his employer.

“In view of these conclusions and Mr. Staley’s intention to challenge them, the board [do Barclays] and Mr. Staley have agreed that he will resign from his role as Group Chief Executive and Director of Barclays,” said Barclays in its statement on Monday.

“It should be noted that the investigation does not lead to conclusions that Mr. Staley saw, or was aware of, any of Mr. Epstein’s alleged crimes, which was the central issue that sustained Barclays’ support of Mr. Staley thereafter the arrest of Mr. Epstein in the summer of 2019.”

Epstein, a multimillionaire convicted of pedophilia – who was accused of sex trafficking by US federal prosecutors – killed himself in a New York prison cell in 2019 while awaiting trial.

Staley had been running Barclays since the end of 2015. Prior to that, he worked for over 30 years at JPMorgan, where he served as head of the investment banking division.

With the decision, as of this second CS Venkatakrishnan will take over as CEO of Barclays, subject to regulatory approval.
