Bassetti: “AstraZeneca is safe, but if people no longer trust and don’t get vaccinated, it’s better to stop it”

Camilla Canepa, the 18-year-old girl who died of thrombosis after voluntary vaccination with AstraZeneca, allegedly suffered from autoimmune thrombocytopenia: she was taking double hormone therapy. Investigators will check if the pathology was indicated in the form completed before the administration of the vaccine, on May 25th. The Public Prosecutor of Genoa has already launched an investigation into his death.

“What needs to be done now is just that,” Matteo explained Bassetti, San Martino infectious disease specialist of Genoa. «To understand whether or not there is a correlation between Camilla’s death and the vaccine. Pharmacovigilance has precisely this task: so far we can only say that the girl died after the vaccine, because a causal link has not yet been identified ».

In the meantime, however, the open days are suspended.
«The open days were decided by the commissioner structure supported by the CTS. I am in favor of this initiative, but today science must take a step back. Even though AstraZeneca is considered a safe serum, public opinion is angry. “

So what?
“At this point, the decision must also be political. AstraZeneca was an unfortunate vaccine also from a communication point of view: people heard that it shouldn’t be done, there was a stop of the EMA, then a restart, then a new stop on some batches. It has been said that it was good for young people, then for over 55s, and now we are going back. It is understandable that someone takes it out on vaccinators. But the experts must have a clear position ».

Which?
“The goal is not to be able to impose a serum, but to get people vaccinated. We still need a quarter of vaccinated people to achieve herd immunity, which we need. If people no longer trust AstraZeneca and, despite being a good vaccine, they now consider it as a poison, then stop this serum and focus on mRna vaccines, such as Pfitzer and Moderna ».

Who is to blame for this short circuit?
“I think it’s also from the manufacturer, which should have defended its vaccine in a different way. I would have expected the establishment of a toll-free number to provide answers to people’s questions, as well as a clear stance ».

What do you think of AstraZeneca?
“I remain convinced of the safety of this vaccine, but by now, according to the citizen, it is a Serie B serum. The omelette is done: the only thing that can be done is to stop AstraZeneca and set the organizational machine in motion so that be replaced. So the open days will also be able to continue ».

It is assumed that another serum will be given as a booster to those who have received the first dose of AstraZeneca.
«In reality, those who made AstraZeneca and had no side effects could continue to use it: the problems emerge with the first dose. Using it for calls would be a way to keep it alive. “

Can we continue to trust AstraZeneca?
“The scientific data tells us it’s a great vaccine. I would not give it to a young woman who is taking contraceptives or drugs at risk of thrombosis. Now let’s hear what the regulatory bodies will say: the ball passes to them ».

Her 25-year-old niece asked her whether to get vaccinated or not. What did he reply?
«Yes: my sister’s daughter got vaccinated in an open day with AstraZeneca: I recommended it to her because she doesn’t take the contraceptive pill. And I also did it with other young people. In this regard, don’t say that the kids got vaccinated without thinking about it, just to be able to go to the disco: instead they weighed the risks and benefits. I can assure you. I would avoid this unfairly critical attitude towards young people, which creates an opposition that does not help anyone ».
