Belarus: Searches of journalists’ homes and arrests of citizens for insulting comments

Home raids on human rights activists have been under way in several parts of Belarus since this morning, the Russian website RadioFreeEurope / Radio Liberty reported, citing the Vyasna human rights center, with TASS 11 people for insulting comments on social media against Russian paratroopers who lost their lives during the recent joint Russian-Belarusian military exercises.

The Minsk-based Vyasna Human Rights Center said in a statement that a new wave of investigations had begun early in the morning in the cities of Minsk, Gomel, Grodno, Brest, Vitebsk, Krytsov, Retsica, Mozir and other parts of the country.

In the southeastern city of Mozir, police confiscated books and posters of activist Vladimir Telepun after searching his apartment and holiday home.

In the eastern Belarusian city of Vitebsk, police searched the homes of two activists, Vladimir Kiko and Mikhail Kosurec. In the town of Krytsov, police arrested journalist Sergei Nerovny after a search of his apartment.

Also, police officers from the Economic Crimes Investigation Department in the eastern city of Machili arrested journalist Valeria Lepeseva for questioning. No reason was given for the move, according to the Vyasna Center.

Journalist Larisa Siarakova was arrested in the town of Gomel, and her phone and computer were confiscated after a search of her home. During the interrogation he refused to answer the questions, but was warned of the consequences that would have if he published material of the case file.

In the town of Gomel, police raided the home of journalist Nadezhda Vitina, while in Minsk, searches were carried out on the homes of at least 10 people.

Following the 2020 presidential election in Belarus, the authorities launched a massive crackdown on the opposition and its supporters.
