Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo resigned after his party lost national and European parliamentary elections this Sunday.
The 48-year-old politician fought back tears as he announced the decision on Sunday night in Brussels.
In the European elections, De Croo’s Open VLD party also performed poorly, obtaining just 5.8% of the vote, according to the RTBF poll.
The Vlaams Belang party and the N-VA party were tied, with 14.8% and 14.2% of the vote, respectively, according to the RTBF poll.
In his resignation speech, De Croo promised to allow a “proper transfer” of power to his successor.
Highlighting that he remains convinced that Belgium “needs a new government with full powers that can take on its tasks”.
