Belgium: It was the hottest New Year since the measurements started

Belgium had the warmest New Year in its history since the measurements started.

The temperature reached 14.3 degrees Celsius in Ykl, at 2 noon on Saturday.

This is the second highest temperature, after the one recorded on January 1, 2012, with mercury showing 13.6 degrees.

However, according to the Royal Meteorological Institute, in 2021 temperatures were slightly lower than usual.

In 2021, the average temperature in Belgium was 10.7 degrees Celsius, with the normal value being at 11 degrees. April, with an average of 7.3 points, is the coldest recorded between 1991-2020.

During the year, the temperature did not exceed 29.5 degrees, the lowest temperature of the reference period. Also, no heat wave was recorded, ending a series of six years marked by the phenomenon.

Last year was characterized by high humidity: 2021 is the third wettest year of the reference period. A new record was set in July with 166.5 mm of rainfall. In total during the three summer months, 410.7 mm of rainfall was recorded, which is a record since 1833! The greatest cumulative effect was measured on July 14, one of the days of the floods that hit the country.

The total duration of sunshine, 1,589 hours and 57 minutes, was close to normal, 1,603 hours and 40 minutes, but it is noted that April, June and September were sunnier than July and August.
