Belo Horizonte records 117 days without rain

The Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte is facing one of the worst droughts in recent decades. According to data from the Natural Disaster Monitoring and Alert Center (Cemaden), It hasn’t rained in the capital of Minas Gerais since April 18th this year, totaling 117 days without rain.

Due to low humidity in the air, which is usually lower during winter but is made worse by the lack of rain in recent months, respiratory diseases and conjunctivitis become common.

In a statement, the Civil Defense reported that there has not yet been any record of an increase in the demand for hospitals and health centers due to diseases that are common in dry weather. However, the agency is warning the population and recommending precautions. Check it out:

Civil Defense Recommendations

– Hydrate yourself during the day;

– Choose light and fresh foods, such as salads, fruits, grilled meats;

– Avoid fried foods;

– Sleep in a ventilated place, moistened with humidifiers, or place a bowl of water;

– Avoid outdoor physical activities and sun exposure between 10 am and 5 pm;

– Avoid bathing in very hot water, to avoid increasing the dryness of the skin, if necessary use moisturizer;

– In case of respiratory problems, seek a specialist;

– Do not start fires in vacant lots, woods or forests. In case of fire, immediately notify the Fire Department (193), Civil Defense (199) or Military Police (190).
