Berlin residents protest against the advance of the far right in politics

Around 15 thousand people, according to police estimates, protested in Berlin against right-wing politics this Saturday (8), on the eve of the elections for the European Parliament.

Protesters gathered near the Victory Column were seen carrying European Union flags and posters urging people to vote on Sunday (9), as well as criticizing the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

“You have to vote,” said protester Nina. “You shouldn’t vote for the AfD. You should vote for a democratic party,” she added.

The far-right, anti-immigrant AfD is expected to perform strongly in both Sunday’s European elections and regional elections in three states in September.

“It is surprising that the partisan scene around Germany in Europe is also becoming increasingly right-wing extremist,” said another protester, Hans Mueller. “That’s the main problem we have at the moment.”

Although the party still polls well in most national polls, support for the AfD has declined this year, hit by adverse court rulings, concerns about its links to China and Russia, and revelations that senior party members participated in talks about the deportation of non-ethnic Germans.

Germans will vote on Sunday in the European Parliament elections to choose their direct representatives in the supranational legislative body.
