US President Joe Biden exchanged a “handshake” with … a fist with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as reported by the country’s state television.
Biden’s visit to Saudi Arabia is being closely watched, with experts watching the body language and rhetoric of the US president as he seeks to mend Washington’s relations with Riyadh.
During this visit, Biden is expected to discuss human rights, one of the many issues that caused the “freeze” in relations between the two countries after US intelligence concluded that the crown prince approved the killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October 2018. Mohammed bin Salman denies any involvement in the murder.
Biden was received on his arrival in Jeddah by the regional governor of Makkah, Prince Khalid al-Faisal. The Saudi ambassador to the US, Rima bin Badar al Saud, was also present at the reception of the American president. State television then aired footage of Biden being welcomed to the royal palace by Mohammed bin Salman.
