US President Joe Biden approved a state of emergency for California this Saturday (14). Storms have hit the region since December 26.
At least 19 people died as a result of the rains, which also caused flooding, power outages, landslides and road closures.
Biden has ordered federal aid to supplement state, tribal and local recovery efforts in areas affected by severe winter storms, flooding, mudslides and mud, the White House said in a statement.
The president’s action makes federal funds available to affected individuals in Merced, Sacramento and Santa Cruz counties.
