Miss Universe 2022: USA wins pageant for 9th time

R’bonney Gabriel, from the United States, is the winner of Miss Universe 2022. The event took place this Saturday (14), in New Orleans, being the 71st Miss Universe pageant.

Amanda Dudamel of Venezuela was crowned vice queen, while the other finalist was Andreína Martinez of Miss Dominican Republic.

The United States is the country whose representatives won the dispute the most: nine times in total. Venezuela comes next, with seven achievements.

At first, the five “finalists” were defined:

  • Venezuela: Amanda Dudamel
  • U.S: R’bonney Gabriel
  • Puerto Rico: Ashley Carino
  • Curacao: Arijana Podgajski
  • Dominican Republic: Andrea Martinez

And then, the three representatives from which the winner emerged:

  • United States: R’bonney Gabriel
  • Venezuela: Amanda Dudamel
  • Dominican Republic: Andreina Martinez

84 women competed in New Orleans

A total of 84 women participated in the pageant, held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, according to the Miss Universe website.

City Mayor LaToya Cantrell said in a statement that she was “honored” to host the pageant.

“The City of New Orleans and the Miss Universe Organization share common values ​​tied to celebrating women’s inclusion, culture and empowerment,” Cantrell said in the statement.

“Former Miss Universe delegates and winners have become surgeons, diplomats, politicians and business leaders, all championing social causes that are important to them,” she pointed out.

“Hosting this event demonstrates the significant global impact that an international city like New Orleans has on tourism and culture around the world,” he continued.

The contest included personal testimonials, in-depth interviews, costume and swimwear and eveningwear contests.

The winner was chosen by a committee made up of:

  • Ximena Navarrete, Miss Universe 2010;
  • Big Freedia, musician;
  • Mara Martin, model
  • Wendy Fitzwilliam, Miss Universe 1998/
  • Emily Austin, actress and model;
  • Olivia Quido, skincare entrepreneur;
  • Myrka Dellanos, presenter and journalist;
  • Sweta Patel, author and vice president of marketing and merchandising at Roku;
  • Olivia Jordan, Miss USA 2015;
  • Kathleen Ventrella, Marketing Executive.

Harnaaz Sandhu successor crown

The competition ended with the previous Miss Universe, Harnaaz Sandhu, crowning her successor. Sandhu was the first female representative from India to win the Miss Universe title in 21 years.

She won the title in the contest held in Israel at the end of 2021. Eighty women participated in that competition, organized by comedian Steve Harvey.

Sandhu is a strong advocate of menstrual fairness, inspired by her mother’s career as a gynecologist, according to the Miss Universe website.

She is also an actress and advocate for women’s rights and fights for climate change awareness.

Jeannie Mai Jenkins and Olivia Culpo present competition

Television presenter and stylist Jeannie Mai Jenkins hosted Miss Universe 2022 alongside Olivia Culpo, who won Miss Universe in 2012.

Additionally, musicians Big Freedia, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Amanda Shaw, Tank and the Bangas, and Yolanda Adams performed in competition this year.
