Biden declares the state of Kentucky in a state of major disaster

LAST UPDATE: 08.33

US President Joe Biden declared the state of Kentucky, which was hit by tornadoes on Friday, causing huge material damage and killing dozens of people, last Sunday night (early Monday morning Greek time).

This decision of the American president paves the way for further assistance from the federal state.

The governor of Kentucky, Andy Besiar, submitted an official request to the White House earlier Sunday to declare a major catastrophe in his state, the head of FEMA, the federal emergency response service, told reporters earlier.

Family photo found 200 km away

A family photo, which was swept away when a house was hit on Friday night by one of the tornadoes that swept the US, traveled more than 200 kilometers, swept away by the wind, told an American woman through social networking sites.

Leaving her home in New Albany, Indiana, Saturday morning, Katie Posten noticed a small piece of paper on the windshield of her car. When he picked it up, he realized that it was a black and white photograph.

The snapshot, which depicts a white woman wearing a striped dress with a little boy in her arms, has the note “Gertie Swatchel + J. D. Swatzel, 1942” on the back.

Mrs. Posten had the idea to post the photo on her accounts on the social networking sites Twitter and Facebook, in the hope that this way she will find her owners.

Her message, which was widely circulated, allowed her to be contacted by a family from Dawson Springs, a city in Kentucky that was partially destroyed by tornadoes.

A member of the Swatch family recognized the photo and the faces in it. “Wow. Think how far it went. This is a photo of my dad’s grandparents,” Cole Swatzel said in a post on his Facebook account.

In a straight line, Dawson Springs is about 210 miles (210 km) from New Albany; by car, about 270. After all, these are cities in different states.

Ms. Posten assured that her goal is to return the photo to the Swatch family.
