In a closing speech at the Summit of the Americas this Friday (20), the President of the United States, Joe Biden, said that 20 countries in the Americas have made a commitment to protect immigrants.
“Twenty countries will now sign the Los Angeles declaration on migration and protection. This declaration will transform the way we deal with migration in America,” he said.
Biden said the document will see countries work together to address the issue of migration. The US president cited the global economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, war in Ukraine, and the political consequences brought by autocratic regimes as determinants for increasing migration, not only in North America, but also in Colombia.
According to Biden, the LA declaration has four pillars that support the protection of immigrants.
- The first is stability and assistance to ensure that communities receive refugees;
- The second pillar is having legal pathways for migration in the region to protect refugees;
- The third is to work in a more humane way at the borders;
- And the fourth pillar is about providing coordinated responses to emergencies.
“We need to prevent people from migrating in a dangerous and illegal way. We have to ensure that borders have approaches that are innovative,” Biden said.
In the speech, Biden said it is necessary to address vulnerable immigrants and the countries that receive them.
“And that is why we have the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees also participate in this declaration.”
