US President Joe Biden said on Friday that he is hopeful about the case of WNBA star Brittney Griner, following indications that Russia is ready to discuss a prisoner exchange with the US.
“I’m hopeful. We are working hard,” Biden told reporters outside the White House after signing a bill.
Griner was convicted this week of deliberately smuggling drugs into Russia and sentenced to nine years in prison. At trial, Griner testified that she has a prescription for medical cannabis and had no intention of bringing the drug to Russia.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday that Russia was ready to discuss a prisoner exchange with the US through a diplomatic channel agreed by Putin and Biden, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the US would seek Russia’s latest offer to discuss a presidential-level prisoner exchange involving Griner.
