Blinken – Sudani informal meeting in Baghdad

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken met with Iraq’s prime minister today during a visit to Baghdad that was not previously announced by the State Department, as the US Secretary of State seeks to coordinate a regional approach to the situation in Syria after overthrow of the Assad regime. Blinken, who began his tour of the region by first visiting Jordan on Thursday, traveled to the Iraqi capital after visiting Ankara. In Iraq, the head of American diplomacy met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani. Iran’s influence The State Department said Blinken in Baghdad “will emphasize the US commitment to the US-Iraq strategic partnership and to the security, stability and sovereignty of Iraq.” Blinken’s visit to Iraq was not announced until after he met Sudani.
