Blinken: US and Iraq are “determined” to prevent resurgence of the Islamic State

The US and Iraq are “determined to ensure that the Islamic State cannot resurface” after the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday (13) after meeting with the Iraqi Prime Minister.

Speaking at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Blinken noted that the U.S. and Iraq “had tremendous success in taking away the territorial caliphate that the Islamic State created years ago, and now, having put Daesh back in its box, we cannot let him out.” Daesh is another name for ISIS.

“We are determined to ensure that this does not happen,” Blinken said, adding that no country knows more than Iraq the importance of Syria not becoming a platform for terrorism.

Blinken also reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to working with Iraq “on security and always working for Iraqi sovereignty to ensure that it is strengthened and preserved.”

He added that “what is happening in Syria has an important impact, and it is very significant that Iraq, along with many other countries in the region and beyond, will make their best efforts to support the Syrian people as they emerge from the Assad years. .”

The handover of power to rebel forces in Syria was met with celebration as well as uncertainty and concern. It is unclear what a new system of government in Syria would look like, how it will work given the different groups and interests involved, and whether the reordering of power will only lead to more instability.

Among others, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned that ISIS could take advantage of a power vacuum in the country.
