Boat capsizes in lake in Pakistan, at least 10 children die

At least 10 children were killed on Sunday when a boat carrying students from a religious school capsized in northwest Pakistan, officials said.

About eight students are still missing, while seven injured have been taken to hospital, according to local authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where the accident took place.

Kohat District Commissioner Mahmood Aslam said about 50 pupils from a local religious school had gathered near Lake Tanda for a picnic.

Twenty-five ventured into the water — which has been closed off by authorities to recreational rides — in a boat that capsized, he said.

The students who died were aged between seven and 12, according to a list released to Reuters by the commissioner.

He said Pakistani military divers were helping with rescue and recovery efforts. Video footage from local broadcasters and on social media showed rescuers in the water.

The accident happened on the same day as an unrelated accident, when a bus in southern Pakistan fell off a bridge and killed more than 40 people.
