Bolivia: Gunmen seize a military installation in Cochabamba and are holding prisoners

A group of gunmen has seized a military installation near the Bolivian city of Cochabamba and is holding some soldiers captive, the country’s armed forces said. Cochabamba, located in central Bolivia, is considered a stronghold of supporters of former president Evo Morales. In the announcement, the armed men are described as “mischievous”, while it is noted that they have placed weapons and ammunition under their control and it is underlined that such actions are tantamount to treason. The army called on those responsible for occupying the barracks to leave it “immediately and peacefully”. The seizure of the military installation is seen as a response to efforts in the past few days by security forces to break up highway roadblocks set up by Morales’ supporters. Morales and current president Luis Arce both come from Bolivia’s ruling socialist party and were once allies but are now political rivals. Earlier in the week Morales accused Arce of trying to kill him. Source: RES
