Bolsonaro denies creating tax on purchases in foreign apps

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) denied this Saturday (21) that he is going to sign measures that create taxes for online shopping made from foreign suppliers. “I will not sign any MP (Provisional Measure) to tax purchases by apps like Shopee, AliExpress, Shein, etc. as much of the media has been publicizing”, he wrote on the social network Twitter.

Bolsonaro’s speech comes in a line contrary to the one signaled this week by his Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, for whom the digitax (tax for digital purchases) should be a way out to “equalize the game”.

The chief executive added in the tweet that, for possible irregularities in this service, or others, the way out should be inspection, not tax increases.

On Thursday (19), during a seminar, the minister was asked precisely about this topic, and he was told about the purchase of dresses by companies like these at US$ 10, when the value of equivalent products made in Brazil is around of BRL 300.

Guedes explained that his team is working on building a digital tax with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). “Our team is working on digitax with the OECD,” he said. “China is wild capitalism. It is practicing Adam Smith: it goes through customs clearance, this is the 18th century, there is no minimum wage there.”

According to Guedes, the “virtual camelodrome” really exists and is “massive”. “There’s all kinds of fraud there, but we want the rules of the game to be the same for everyone. It is a fraud because it falsifies the value of the good. There’s something going on that we have to look into. I think we are entering the digital world more and more.”

The solution, according to the minister, is the emergence of digitax to equalize the game. “I don’t know how it will be done. There are countries wanting to play very high taxes. We’re going to have to get into that,” he said. According to him, governments need to act on a level playing field. “It’s the chainsaw massacre we’re seeing today.”
