The book “Um defeito de cor”, by Ana Maria Gonçalves, had its biggest spike in searches on Google in February, when Portela took a plot based on the work to Sapucaí. The information was obtained from a survey carried out by CNN in the Google Trends tool.
The plot, developed by carnival artists André Rodrigues and Antônio Gonzaga and researchers Beatriz Chaves and Marcelo D. Macedo, was awarded a Gold Standard and took Portela to fourth place in the 2024 Carnival.

The work, released in 2006, tells the saga of Kehinde, a black woman who is kidnapped in the Kingdom of Dahomey, now Benin, in Africa, when she was eight years old, and brought to Bahia, where she is enslaved.
From this individual story, important themes such as the exploitation of Africans and descendants in the diaspora are addressed, as well as processes of struggle and resistance during eight decades in Brazil.
The protagonist, Kehinde, is inspired by Luísa Mahin, who was the mother of the poet Luís Gama and participated in the famous Revolta dos Malês, a movement led by enslaved Muslims in favor of abolition.
The Portela fashion show brought a new perspective on the novel Ana Maria Gonçalves. In the book, the mother writes a letter to her son who has been lost for decades. The samba brings the son's emotional response.
According to reported by Correio Brasiliensethe book's stocks on Amazon ran out during the Portela parade, which took place in the early hours of February 13th.
