British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that sanctions and other measures will be ready in the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine, while his government will ask parliament to impose sanctions on Russian citizens and companies.
Writing in The Times on Tuesday, Johnson said Britain was considering developing Typhoon fighter jets for the British Air Force, as well as Royal Navy ships to protect Southeast Europe.
Johnson also wrote that Secretary of Defense Ben Wallace and Secretary of State Liz Tras will soon travel to Russia.
Johnson’s comments came as U.S. officials say a Russian attack on Ukraine could take place in the coming days or weeks. Russia has mobilized about 100,000 troops near the border with Ukraine. Moscow denies planning an invasion. “British sanctions and other measures will be ready for any new Russian attack,” Johnson wrote.
“The government will ask for new powers from parliament to impose sanctions in a broader context against Russian citizens and companies, including any company affiliated with the Russian state or operating in a sector of strategic importance to the Kremlin.”
Britain is also preparing to bolster a British-led naval battle squadron in Estonia, according to Johnson.
“I welcome Germany’s statement that the Nord Stream 2 pipeline will be re-examined in the event of an intrusion,” he added.
US President Joe Biden said yesterday after a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Soltz that if Russia invades Ukraine, there will be no more Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. for Ukraine, Russia and sanctions, but did not immediately confirm plans for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
As the most divisive energy project in Europe, the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is designed to double the amount of gas flowing from Russia directly to Germany, bypassing Ukraine.
