The full support of the European Union in relation to the proposed Confidence Building Measures (CCM) of the President of the Republic of Cyprus N. Anastasiadis, was expressed by the High Representative of the EU, Josep Borrell, in a letter to President Anastasiadis.
As Mr. Borel characteristically states, he has already conveyed to the Turkish Foreign Minister the position that the said MOE can intensify the efforts for the settlement of the Cyprus problem and lead to the resumption of the negotiation process.
He also called on the Turkish side to study the proposals of President Anastasiadis, emphasizing that Turkey’s constructive stance on the issue of the UN, and the Cyprus issue in general, is considered crucial in terms of recording progress in Euro-Turkish relations. He also noted that he will continue to raise this issue in his forthcoming meetings, as will be the case in discussions between EU institutions and Turkey.
Regarding the ongoing Turkish provocations in Varosia, Mr. Borel expressed his strong concern about the situation as it develops in the region. In the light of the recent opening of a beach within the enclosed area, the EU High Representative stressed that he would continue to raise with Turkey the issue of Varos and the need to end Turkey’s actions in violation of the relevant United Nations Resolutions, but and European Union decisions.
According to the Government Representative of Cyprus Mario Pelekano, in his letter, the High Representative once again expresses the need to resume the talks and points out that the appointment of an Envoy of the Secretary General for the Cyprus issue will strengthen this goal, which The EU supports and wants it finalized as soon as possible.
Finally, Mr. Borel reiterated the EU’s commitment to a bi-zonal bi-communal federation solution in Cyprus, with political equality as recorded in the relevant UN resolutions and reports. It also states the need to create appropriate conditions for the resumption of negotiations, through the MOEs proposed by the President of the Republic.
