The European Union condemns in the strongest possible way the execution in Iran of British Iranian citizen Alireza Akbari and reiterates its strong opposition to the death penalty under any circumstances, said a statement by EU High Representative Josep Borrell on behalf of the EU.
The European Union extends its condolences to the family of Mr Akbari and expresses its full solidarity with the United Kingdom. The execution of a European citizen is a horrific precedent that the EU will follow closely, it said.
It is also emphasized that the death penalty violates the inalienable right to life enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and constitutes the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment.
Finally, the EU calls for Iran to refrain from any future executions and to pursue a consistent policy to abolish the death penalty.
