At least 14 people died in floods in Bosnia and Herzegovina today and others are missing as torrential rains and landslides destroyed roads, houses and bridges in the center of the country, officials said. Jablanica, about 70 kilometers southwest of the capital Sarajevo, where the deaths were reported, has been completely sealed off after damage to its road and rail links. Bosnia’s tripartite presidency, made up of a Bosniak (Muslim), a Serb and a Croat, said it had requested the army’s help for the wider Jablanica area and that engineer and rescue units as well as a helicopter had been deployed to the area to rescuing, among others, 17 people from a psychiatric hospital.
