Brazil has condemned “in the strongest terms” an attack by the Israeli army on a school in Gaza City. Local authorities say around 100 people were killed.
In a statementthe Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that the target of the Israeli bombing was a civilian infrastructure that housed Palestinian refugees.
“The bombing that hit the Al-Tabin school in Gaza City left dozens dead and injured, including women and children. Brazil expresses its deepest solidarity with the families of the victims, the government and the people of the State of Palestine,” the Itamaraty declared.
The Brazilian government also demanded that Israel “act based on the principle of proportionality, taking the necessary measures to protect the civilian population in the occupied territories.”
“Disrespect for this principle has been a recurring theme in Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip over the past ten months. Brazil deplores the fact that, amid efforts to negotiate an agreement that ensures a ceasefire, the release of hostages and unimpeded access to humanitarian aid in Gaza, the Israeli government continues to adopt measures that escalate the conflict and further distance the peoples of the region from the attainment of peace,” he added.
“In this context, Brazil calls on the parties to immediately and fully implement the ceasefire plan approved by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2735 (2024),” he concluded.
Attack on school and mosque
At least 93 Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli attack on a school and mosque in Gaza housing displaced people, according to local officials.
Gaza Civil Defense said people were performing dawn prayers at the Al-Tabi’in compound in the Al-Daraj neighborhood in eastern Gaza City when the site was hit on Saturday night (10).
“We have recovered at least 90 people who were killed,” spokesman Mahmoud Basal told CNN, adding that “many of them are torn apart, many are still unidentified.”
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed to the broadcaster that it had struck the school, saying its air force “precisely targeted Hamas terrorists operating inside a Hamas command and control center embedded” in the building.
The military also said that before the airstrike, “several measures were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including the use of precision munitions, aerial surveillance and intelligence.”
After the CNN asked the IDF for evidence to support its claim that the compound housed a command and control center, it said it had information saying that around 20 Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters operated out of the building.
The IDF also disputed the death toll given by Gaza authorities. CNN cannot independently verify the numbers.
Saturday’s attack is the fifth on a school in Gaza by the Israeli army since last Sunday (4).
