“Brazil is not that far from OECD standards in several aspects”, according to the senior fellow of the Brazilian Center for International Relations and former director of the WTO, Victor do Prado, in an interview with CNN Radio .
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development will assess Brazil’s practices and policies on topics ranging from trust in institutions to deforestation in negotiations from now on for the country’s entry into the organization.
The Ministers of Economy, Paulo Guedes and of the Civil House, Ciro Nogueira, will be at the OECD this Thursday (9) during the approval of the roadmapa kind of “mine map”, which brings the aspects to be followed.
According to Victor do Prado, it is not a “letter of requirements, but rather a letter of conditions for negotiating entry into the OECD.”
The former director of the WTO said that, in his experience, looking at what other countries have already done, “it is not so difficult” to see that Brazil is fully capable of complying with the conditions.
“They are not normative rules, which all countries should be concerned about in the same way, there are nations like Mexico, Korea and Portugal that are already members, but have different policies”, he exemplified.
In common, these countries “have a willingness and similarity of point of view, regarding the need to respect legislation, a more economically open world, protection of the environment, a stance against global warming.”
“These are commitments that Brazil has already assumed; now, the question is to show that we are effectively pursuing these goals”, he added.
Victor Prado reinforced that the roadmap it is a “second step” for Brazil’s accession to the OECD: “From here, the negotiation process begins, which may last a few years and may end with an invitation to join, depending on negotiation and Brazil’s willingness to participate”.
