In Buraco do Lume Square in the center of Rio at Brazil the murdered Afro-Brazilian city councilor Marielle Franco will “live” forever, as yesterday, when she would have had a birthday, the statue made in her honor was inaugurated. The monument depicts her smiling and with her left fist raised.
The life-size bronze statue is by Brazilian artist Edgar Duvivir, funded by donations. Franco used to organize political gatherings in this particular square to inform about her work in the city council when she was a member of it.
Member of the left-wing PSOL party, lesbian, mother of a daughter aged 23 today, Marielle Francou fought for years against disproportionate police brutality and for the rights of slum dwellers, especially young black people, women, members of the LGBTI community.
“In a highly racist society, the statue of Mariele Franco was placed to remind us of the world we want to build,” said Monica Benicio, the partner of the murdered councillor.
The murder
Born in Marais, a large complex of favelas in Rio, Marielle Franco was murdered by a gunman along with her driver, Anderson Gomez, on March 14, 2018, at the age of 38. The car that carried her became a sieve from the bulletswhile returning home from a meeting at the center.
THE murder of the charismatic politician had caused an uproar and strong emotional reactions in Brazil and abroad. More than four years after her death, there are still quite a few dark spots surrounding her murder.
In March 2019, the authorities arrested two police officers, one of which was the alleged murderer and the second the driver of the car that was used in the pursuit of the politician. They were also suspected of being associated with paramilitary groups that were spreading terror in some popular neighborhoods in Rio.
The defendants deny that they committed the crime and remain in custody, pending the verdict of the justice. But the Police have not yet given an answer to two basic questions: who ordered Mariele Franco to be murdered and why.
