The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, will once again defend the end of hostilities between Israel and Hamas during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council. A High Level Open Debate is scheduled for this Wednesday (29), in New York. Vieira will participate in the meeting in person, before traveling to Dubai, where he will participate with President Lula at COP28.
The meeting, called by China, which holds the temporary presidency of the Council, will take place on the Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. Brazil was in charge of the collegiate in October, when war broke out with an attack by Hamas on the 7th of that month.
The Brazilian chancellor is expected to repeat the tone of his previous speeches calling for an immediate ceasefire and condemning the escalation of the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. The death of children and civilians in Gaza should also once again be the focus of the declaration, as well as the call for the release of hostages held by Hamas.
According to Itamaraty, Vieira will emphasize the need to seek a sustainable solution to the crisis in the region with the implementation of two States. In other words, the creation of a “viable Palestinian State, living in peace with Israel, within mutually accepted and internationally recognized borders.”
