Brazilian exports of cookies and bread grew by 25% in 2021, when compared to the previous year. 201 thousand tons of the products were sold abroad, which represented a collection of USD 245.5 million.
The data are part of a survey released, this Friday (28), by the Brazilian Association of Biscuit, Pasta and Industrialized Bread & Cakes (ABIMAPI).
According to the survey, the significant increase in the export of products is related to people’s preference for more accessible foods, with greater practicality and shelf life for consumption at home.
The financial issue was also decisive for this result. Because they are cheap products, people started to consume more food.
The research also points out that the devaluation of the real had a positive influence on the results of exports, since the exchange rate deterioration makes the product cheaper for foreign consumers and facilitates exports.
“The exchange rate issue favors this movement, since the Brazilian currency has devalued, making national products more accessible to the foreign market. This is all because exports are always traded in dollars. The pandemic also favored an increase in demand for products that are consumed indoors, as people spend more time at home”, explained the international director of ABIMAPI, Rodrigo Iglesias.
The survey data indicate that the main destinations of the products were the countries of the Middle East, the African continent and Venezuela, regions that usually consume Brazilian biscuits.
According to the survey, only the African continent is responsible for almost 50% of exports of cookies and bread from Brazil.
“We have had an expressive growth in the export of these products to Venezuela over the last few years. This is justified by the demand of this country for this type of food, which is much higher than Brazilian consumption, for example. The per capita consumption of bread and cookies by Venezuelans is huge”, added Rodrigo Iglesias.
breads and cakes
For the first time, the category of industrialized breads and cakes reached more than 100 thousand tons of exports in just one year.
In all, it handled USD 112.3 million of exported products, resulting from the sale of 114 thousand tons of products, totaling a 30% increase in 2021 compared to the previous year.
Among the main products are Panettone, which exceeded the margin of US$ 20 million and 6 thousand tons, and loaf of bread, one of the items that grew the most in the pandemic.
In 2019, Brazil exported 155 tons of loaves of bread and, in 2021, there were almost 2,500 tons, an increase of almost 20 times in just 2 years.
Bauducco, for example, reports a historic record in the revenue of its exports in the year 2021.
Sales of Panettone grew 20% only for the United States and, on average, about 15% in other markets. The sliced bread manufactured by the company, on the other hand, had a 2,000% increase in sales in 2021.
“The pandemic favored our bakery products with a longer shelf life, adding to our logistics strategy. The consumer prioritized more durable items staying at home longer. The restrictions on visiting bakeries and grocery stores to buy artisanal items made consumers opt for substitutes found in our products”, says the company’s Export Director, Edgar Matos.
