Brazilian errs from Patagonia and walks for hours until it is rescued

A trip of Adventure by Patagonia almost ended in tragedy for the Brazilian programmer Thiago Crevelloni. He crossed the southern Argentina alone when he got lost during a strong snowfall, the car got the car in the snow and had to walk for hours in the extreme cold until he was rescued by a police patrol.

The saga began when Thiago left the city of El Bolsón to El Calafate, Patagonia. To shorten the route, he decided to make a stop at Moreno Expert and travel the next day during the day, believing it would be safer.

On the way, however, GPS indicated a shortcut along Route 29, a secondary road, and it decided to follow the orientation. “I was advancing, but it started to snow hard and realized that it had not been through any car in the last kilometers,” he said.

Concerned, he continued driving until a snow dune, made up of the strong wind, made the car bump and be completely stuck. Watch the video of the moment:

Faced with the scenario, Thiago tried to get the car anyway, using stones and pieces of wood, but was unsuccessful. Wet, with the intense cold and no cell phone signal, saw the desperation take over. “I thought I was going to die frozen there. My face burned, the wind was very strong,” he recalls.

With no alternatives, the Brazilian decided to walk in an attempt to find help. It was about 17h, and there was little time left. With water in his backpack and hope, he followed the road. According to Thiago, the night came along with even lower temperatures, hunger and tiredness. “I started to feel bad, disoriented. After about five hours walking, I fell to the floor. I was lying in the snow trying to create strength,” he recalls.

He says that at that moment he thought of giving up, but sought inspiration from survival stories and faith. “I asked God for strength, I got up and kept walking a few more kilometers.”

That’s when he spotted a light in the distance. “I thought I was delirious, but it was a police car of Santa Cruz.” Thiago signaled with the cell phone flashlight and was soon located by the agents. “I cried with emotion. I thought I was going to die there,” he says.

Taken to a hotel by police, he received food, water and was able to take a hot shower. The next day, with the help of a winch, he recovered the car and went on to El Calafate, where he intends to stay for two months.

Working remotely as a programmer, Thiago began the adventure for Argentina about two months ago. He has passed Mendoza and El Bolsón and, after El Calafate, will continue to Ushuaia, at the southern end of the continent.

The rescue was only possible thanks to the hostess where he was staying, who realized his delay to arrive and called the police. “If it wasn’t for her, I don’t know what would have happened. Today I’m fine, I’m quiet, I’m saved and I may be telling this story,” he said.
