Brazilian fugitive arrested in the USA: The anguish is over, sister of Danilo Cavalcante’s victim tells CNN

The arrest of Danilo Cavalcante this Wednesday (13) generated relief among the family of Débora Brandão, who he killed in the United States. Cavalcante had been on the run for 14 days after escaping from a prison in the US state of Pennsylvania.

“The 14 days were full of apprehension and anguish, but now that’s over,” he told CNN Silvia Brandão.

“He was arrested and we expect him to pay for the monstrous crime he committed to my sister, in a cowardly way, in front of children and in broad daylight.”

Débora, who was Danilo’s companion, was stabbed and killed in April 2021. Cavalcante was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole on August 16 and was on the run from August 31 to September 13.

The killer was considered “extremely dangerous” and, during the searches, schools were closed and residents were put on alert. The reward for information that helped in the search reached almost R$125,000.

Request for help

Despite the relief with Cavalcante’s arrest, the businesswoman is still struggling to bring the urn with her sister’s ashes to Brazil and say goodbye, hoping to have the support of the Brazilian government.

“The whole family needs to go through this grieving process,” said Silvia.

Another case

In Brazil, Danilo Cavalcante is also accused of a homicide that happened in 2017, in Tocantins, which is why he fled the country, according to Robert Clark, deputy supervisor of the US Marshals Service. At the time, the victim was Valter Júnior Moreira dos Reis.

Denise Moreira dos Reis, sister of the young man murdered in 2017, reports that the crime happened after Valter and Danilo were involved in a car accident. “My brother crashed his car, he owed it a repair and he was killed because of it,” she told CNN .

Denise considers the reason to be “nonsense” that could have been avoided, since her father and her own brother worked and were able to bear the loss of the crash. “My brother said he was going to pay the debt, but Danilo couldn’t wait”, recalls Denise.
