Brazilians in Europe go to Poland to help refugees from Ukraine

More than fifteen hours of travel between Germany and the Polish-Ukrainian border with one goal: to help refugees fleeing the war between Russia and Ukraine. Follow the special coverage of CNN.

Brazilian Clara Magalhães Martins made the journey to receive Brazilians who have nowhere to go when they arrive in the country. She started an aid group for Brazilians residing in Europe.

In the group, they update the situation of the border, donations, news, train schedules, arrange rides for those arriving and even make their own home available as a shelter in case of need.

In one of the group’s audios, a Brazilian woman who was on the Polish-Ukrainian border reports the scenario.

“The average time to leave Ukraine is two days. There is a line of more than 30 kilometers, there is a stretch of 20 kilometers that is done on foot. They divide into two rows, one for men and one for women and children. But once you’re gone, you’re home,” he says.

The action, which initially emerged as a way to help Brazilians with transportation and shelter, went beyond nationalities.

“Two Brazilians came from Poland who took five people away, another two families from Odessa who managed to catch the bus to Moldova and found a place to stay. The focus is more Brazilian, but people come from all over”, says Clara.

According to her, the aid extends from donations to simpler actions such as charging the cell phone battery or sharing internet access.

“I’m helping the people in Poland who are with the donations. There were Pakistanis today who asked to charge the cell phone in the car, use the wifi a little. There was also a French one”, remembers Clara.

The group created an online fundraiser to help with the costs of transporting people out of Ukraine and to help those who shelter refugees. They also ask for food, clothing and medicine. In addition, the group publishes lists of people who have made their homes available to receive refugees.
