Britain: 19-year-old gunman arrested at Windsor Castle

LAST UPDATE: 19:05

A young man who entered the Windsor Castle estate on Christmas Day has been arrested and is being held on a charge of possession of an assault rifle, police said.

The 19-year-old suspect, from Southampton in the south of England, did not enter a building and the security was mobilized within a few minutes, according to the police of the Valley Valley.

Queen Elizabeth, 95, who has spent much of the pandemic at Windsor Castle, was celebrating Christmas with her son, heir to the throne, Prince Charles, his wife Camilla and other members of the royal family.

Times Valley Police Chief Rebecca Myers said members of the royal family had been informed of the incident and authorities did not believe there was any danger to the public.

The episode took place around 8.30 in the morning, local time (10.30 Greek time).

Charles, Camilla and other members of the royal family later arrived for Christmas Mass at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. There is no indication that their schedule was disrupted due to this episode.

Violation of security in royal residences is a rare occurrence. The worst was in 1982, when an intruder climbed a wall, entered Buckingham Palace and roamed a room where the queen was staying.

The royal family usually spends Christmas in Sandringham, in the east of England, but this tradition has been disrupted by the pandemic. The queen also spent last Christmas in Windsor. He did not make any public appearance today. In her pre-recorded message to the nation, she spoke of the loss of her husband, Prince Philip, who died in April at the age of 99.
