Britain: Before the start of the rainy season, the government is looking for “flood guards”

THE British government is appealing for volunteer ‘flood guards’ to help before, during and after a potential flood in Kent, southern England. Many communities in Kent are at risk of flooding and have experienced repeated incidents of flooding both in the past and recently.

More than 70,000 properties in the county are at risk. ‘Flood wardens’ trained to help citizens prepare for floods in areas most at riskreport the British media and relay the ERT.

The Environment Agency (EIA) issued the announcement before the rainy season begins and while the country is going through a period of unprecedentedly high temperatures for the season. Meanwhile, Gabriel Clarke, director of development and sustainability for Chatham-Kent Borough, said a recent climate analysis showed that the Borough’s weather is forecast to become “hotter, wetter and more extreme”..

The Environment Agency is looking for more volunteers to play a key role in developing a Community Flood Plan to support their area and play a key role in implementing this plan in the event of a flood. Volunteers need to attend a single 2-hour training session.

A community flood plan according to the UK Environment Agency includes, a record of areas at risk of flooding in the community, and any necessary actions that need to be taken before, during and after a flood.

The Environment Agency is looking for “flood wardens” for 16 more areas in the country.
