The current director of London's National Portrait Gallery, Nicholas Callinan, has been appointed director of the British Museum, the museum, rocked by the scandal over the theft of 2,000 artefacts, announced today. The previous director, German Hartwig Fischer, the museum's first non-British director, resigned at the end of August 2023 after the thefts were revealed. Since then, former director of the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) Mark Jones has been acting director. Nicholas Kaliman, 46, takes over after the unanimous approval of museum trustees and the agreement of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Head of the National Portrait Gallery since 2015, he has carried out a complete overhaul of the museum's collections, whose space open to the public has been increased by a fifth, according to the announcement of his appointment.
