After revelations in the Marielle case, OAB of RJ will request the reopening of archived investigations

Following allegations of corruption in the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, which came to light with the new revelations of the Marielle Franco case, the Human Rights Commission of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) in Rio will ask for the reopening of other investigations which were archived without conclusion.

“Since the discovery of those responsible for the murder of councilwoman Marielle Franco and the involvement of Civil Police delegates in this organization, several cold cases have come to light. Many lawyers are approaching the Human Rights Commission asking for support to reopen these cases where there are suspicions of targeted filings, of filings without an investigation having actually been carried out”, explained the general secretary of the OAB, Álvaro Quintão.

According to Quintão, a survey is being carried out of cases that could present problems in the investigation. “The Bar Association will officially request the reopening of these investigations,” said the secretary.

According to him, these investigations may not even be limited to the time when Rivaldo Barbosa was head of Police. The police chief was arrested by the Federal Police last Sunday (24), accused not only of helping to plan the councilwoman's death but also of preventing investigations from reaching the real masterminds of the crime, the Brazão brothers.

In addition to Barbosa's arrest and a search and seizure at the home of police chief Giniton Lages, one of those responsible for investigating the circumstances of the deaths of Marielle and her driver, Anderson Gomes, in March 2018, the PF report on the case revealed , also, an alleged monthly payment scheme carried out by criminals for police stations in Rio de Janeiro.

The values, according to testimony from former military police officer and militia member Orlando Oliveira de Araújo, Orlando Curicica, varied according to the unit.

The DH, in addition to what they receive monthly, when a homicide occurs, for example, they leave footage, they leave a trail so that they can direct the homicide to a certain offender, they pay out of pocket”, stated the militia member in a hearing attached to the final report. of the PF on the Marielle case.

“We are cross-referencing the cases with the time period and who was in charge of the investigations. The allegations do not just fall on Deputy Rivaldo, which is why we are carrying out the investigation. I believe that next week we will have this finalized and we will officially request the reopening of the investigations”, concluded the secretary.
