Britain: Russian attack on Donbas loses momentum – Has lost 1/3 of its forces

LAST UPDATE: 12:31

Russia’s attack on Ukraine’s Donbass region “has lost its momentum and is significantly behind schedule,” the British military intelligence service said early Sunday.

“Despite small-scale initial advances, Russia has not been able to make substantial territorial gains over the past month while maintaining consistently high levels of wear and tear,” the Pentagon said in a Twitter post.

“Russia is now likely to have lost a third of the ground combat force it deployed in February,” he added.

These delays will almost certainly be exacerbated by the loss of critical equipment, such as bridging equipment and unmanned surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft, he added.

Russian bridging equipment was in short supply throughout the conflict, slowing down and reducing offensive maneuvers. Russian drones are vital for tactical artillery awareness and direction, but they were vulnerable to Ukrainian anti-aircraft capabilities, according to Britain.

Russian forces are increasingly limited by degraded capabilities, persistent low morale and declining combat effectiveness, the report said.

“In the current circumstances, Russia is unlikely to accelerate dramatically in the next 30 days,” the British military said in a statement on Twitter.
