Black capes and pointed canines: ‘s vampire’s gathering world record was broken in Whitby, Britain, 125 years after the release of the novel “Dracula” by Bram Stoker.
Whitby, this town in the north east of England, inspired the Irish writer to write this novel, which was to become a classic.
“It simply came to our notice then Guinness record for the largest gathering of people disguised as vampires, with 1,369 vampires! ” reported English Heritage, the British organization that manages the now-ruined Whitby Abbey.
The formal dress code was clear and very strict: Participants were required to wear black shoes, black trousers or a dress, a black cape and false, pointed teeth.
The previous record, with 1,039 vampires, was held by the town of Doswell in Virginia, USA.
Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” was published in 1897 and has since inspired many movies. The author had visited Whitby in 1890 and this city, in North Yorkshire, formed the background for his Gothic novel.
