British artist creates “mosaic” paintings from pebbles and stones, with canvas the natural landscape

Having as a canvas the natural landscape, the Justin Bateman creates from gravel and stones ephemeral works of art. Living in Chiang Mai, in Thailand, The British artist leaves “mosaics” on beaches, in the woods, next to rails and on the mountains. In his account at Instagram, The Bateman it simply states “pebbles are my pixels”.

From celebrities to iconic works of art, each work captures the character of its subject in a limited color palette of stone. Using pebbles he finds, he does not actually design his portraits in advance; he lets the stones determine the artistic composition.

“Art should not always be subject to restrictions; however, within its limits I find freedom. “The beauty of this project lies in the fact that starting, I have no idea how the project will look,” he says.

It takes several days to complete some of its pebble highlights Bateman. The artist, however, does not become emotionally dependent on the works he creates. It is inspired by them Tibetans monks who create mandalas with fine detail from sand and then destroy them.

This is a reminder of the transience of life, a subject that explores Bateman with his art. For him, the most satisfying aspect of his artistic activity is that nature will eventually reclaim the works. “My art is temporary, I leave only traces,” he emphasizes.

Although the “mosaics” will eventually disappear, the Bateman photographs them as digital souvenirs. Every work with pebbles is almost like a photo with shadows, while it is unbelievable how much depth and detail Bateman can achieve by “playing” only pebbles.
