British TV presenter and healthy living advocate Michael Mosley was found dead in a rocky area on the Greek island of Symi, just meters from his destination, local authorities told Reuters on Sunday (9).
Mosley, 67, had been missing since Wednesday after walking alone along a coastal path in scorching heat.
“It’s certainly him,” said deputy mayor Nikitas Grillis, pending formal identification.
Police spokeswoman Constantina Dimoglidou said earlier that the body of a person believed to be Mosley was found in the Agia Marina area, north of the village of Pedi and opposite the northeast beach of Agios Nikolaos, where Mosley left for your walk.
Another police officer said his body was found on rocky ground, close to the sea.
Symi mayor Lefteris Papakalodoukas said the discovery was made after he and others, including journalists from state TV ERT, filmed the area from a ship.
“We looked at the recorded evidence and it was obvious that it was, unfortunately, Mosley,” Papakalodoukas said.
“He was found 10 meters from the sea, between 10 and 15 meters from his destination, Agia Marina beach, between a fence and a path.”
State TV ERT reported that he was found lying face down with his head resting on a rock.
“It’s unclear whether he was in an accident or if he didn’t feel well,” Papakalodoukas said.
The coast guard and firefighters were sent to the scene, a Reuters witness said. A coroner was en route to Symi on a coast guard vessel, a police official said, adding that the body would be transferred to the nearby island of Rhodes.
Mosley, who was on the island with his wife, was last seen alive early Wednesday afternoon. His children arrived in Symi on Friday.
Symi, part of the Dodecanese island chain, is about 16 km long and has 2,500 residents.
Mosley has appeared in British programs including the BBC series Trust Me, I’m a Doctor, BBC’s The One Show and ITV’s This Morning. He popularized the 5:2 diet, which advocates intermittent fasting.
Saleyha Ahsan, a doctor who worked with Mosley at the BBC, gave her “sincere condolences” to Mosley’s family.
“He lived and breathed his work,” she told Sky News. “He was an inspiration.”
