Bruno Serra’s replacement at BC could come from the private sector, says Haddad

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, said this Monday (30) that he had discussed with the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, possible profiles of a name to replace the current director of Monetary Policy of the autarchy, and that it has not been ruled out. the appointment of someone from the private sector.

“If you want good technical names, you have few places to look, so it could be from the private sector, it could be from the public sector”, said Haddad when asked by journalists about the subject after a meeting at Fiesp (Federation of Industries of the State of São Paul).

“We discussed profile, and there are good professionals both in the public and private sectors. We have time and we are going to cautiously and calmly carry out an evaluation in partnership and we are going to take it to whom, by right, it is up to the definition of the names”, said Haddad.

The replacement of the current Monetary Policy director, Bruno Serra, is being seen as an important thermometer of the new government’s relationship with the BC, amidst speculation that the government could give preference to career professionals from the bank. The appointment of the director is up to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the nomination must be approved by the Senate.

According to Haddad, in a meeting with Campos Neto this morning, he undertook to speed up the evaluation of legislative proposals that are part of the Central Bank’s agenda.

“These are measures that will improve the business environment in Brazil, we are the most interested in that”, said Haddad. “The idea is that in March we will forward this to the Civil House and, after the government’s judgment, to the National Congress”.
