The Institute of Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT) was inaugurated today in Sofia. It was founded in collaboration with the two largest institutes of technology: the ETH of Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL). Google, Amazon and DeepMind have invested in this project.
The inauguration was attended by President Rumen Radev, Prime Minister Kirill Petkov, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Maria Gabriel, Minister of Education and Science Nikolai Denkov, Minister of Foreign Affairs Anoptopenos and Innovators Of Switzerland’s Affairs, Education and Research Guy Parmelen, who has also served as President of Switzerland.
Petkov said that INSAIT will be run by world-renowned scientists, Bulgarian and foreign, from the best universities in the United States and Israel. The institute is expected to make Bulgaria a major hub for computer science and artificial intelligence, as well as encourage the world’s largest companies to operate in Bulgaria. “The government is keeping its promise to bring the most talented Bulgarians back home,” said Prime Minister Petkov.
“Bulgaria is firmly supporting this institute and will fund it with $ 10m a year, which means a total of $ 100m,” he said. In addition, Google, Amazon and DeepMind will invest $ 7m and Bulgarian tech companies will support it with $ 6m. “This funding model creates a bridge between science and business, which, with the support of the government, can successfully develop and improve the quality of life in Bulgaria,” Petkov said.
The Prime Minister expressed special thanks to the Bulgarian researcher Professor Martin Vetchev, who had the idea for the establishment of the institute. Vetchev leads the laboratory of secure, reliable and intelligent systems at the ETH Zurich. Petkov said that Vetchev had turned a dream into a success, which would soon become a success for Europe and the world.
