Bus driver runs over and kills cyclist in SP; man did not help the victim

The cyclist Rafael Xavier de Mesquita, run over by a bus in the east zone of São Paulo on Sunday (22), died on the morning of Tuesday (24).

Rafael was calmly driving over a crosswalk on Avenida Doutor José Artur Nova when the bus hit him head on. The driver of the vehicle did not stop to help the victim, who was helped by pedestrians.

In a note, SPTrans – responsible for public transport in the city of São Paulo – reported that it had identified the company operating at the accident site and determined the immediate application of the foreseen sanctions.

The concessionaire stated that the driver will be fired and his registration withdrawn from SPTrans, which prevents him from being admitted to another bus company while the case is analyzed by the Justice.

On social media, the Association of Urban Cyclists of São Paulo (Ciclocidade) wrote: “We cannot and will not naturalize this type of event. It wasn’t an accident. It is never an accident and all these cases can be avoided as long as there is training, responsibility for life and concrete actions by the public authorities”.

The Public Security Secretariat of São Paulo (SSP) reported that it is investigating the crime of manslaughter, when there is no intention to kill, and is seeking to locate the suspect to collect his statement.

THE CNN contacted and awaits response from SPTrans.
