Four buses were hijacked and used as barricades to hinder Military Police action in the Morro São João region, in the neighborhoods of Engenho Novo and Sampaio, in the North of Rio de Janeiro, on Monday afternoon (13).
According to information from the PM, UPP São João teams were operating in the community when the criminals tried to obstruct several roads. See below:
According to Rio Ônibus, the four hijacked buses operated on lines 239 (Água Santa x Castelo), 383 (Realengo x Praça da República), 623 (Penha x Saens Peña) and 636 (Merck x Saens Peña).
The entity regretted what happened and highlighted that, in 2025 alone, six cases of buses hijacked and used as barricades have already been recorded.
A man was arrested and taken to the 25th DP (Engenho Novo) for setting fire to objects in the street.
The police action had the support of agents from the Pacification Police Coordination and the Shock Police Battalion, and policing in the region was reinforced.
