Cameroon’s president’s daughter comes out as gay and hopes laws will change in the country

The daughter of Cameroon’s president has said that coming out as gay could help change her country’s laws that criminalize homosexuality. Brenda Bija, who lives between the US and Switzerland, made a post on Instagram on June 30 where she revealed her sexual orientation. In an interview with French newspaper Le Parisien published today, the 27-year-old said she had not revealed to her family that she was gay until she publicly posted a photo of her kissing her partner. “There are many people like me who suffer because of who they are,” he stressed. “If I can give them hope, help them feel less alone, if I can send love, I’m happy.” Same-sex relationships are punishable by up to five years in prison under Cameroon’s penal code.
