Canada: 22-year-old man found guilty of four murders after trucking Muslim family of five

A A 22-year-old Canadian man was found guilty today for killing four members of a Muslim family, which he drove away with his truck in 2021, public broadcaster CBC reported. The jury took just six hours to reach their verdict. Nathaniel Veltman, who attacked the family in Landon, Ontario, now faces the possibility of being sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole before he serves 25 years.

Prosecutors argued that the attack was terrorist attackas Veltman’s online posts suggest he was champion of the white race, opposed to mass immigration. The prosecutor recalled that the 22-year-old had written a “terrorist manifesto” found on his computer, in which he described his hatred of Muslims.

Five members of the Afzaal family were out for a walk near their home one afternoon in June 2021 when Veltman ran into them with his truck, while walking on the sidewalk. Salman Afzaal, his wife, their 15-year-old daughter and grandmother, Afzaal’s mother, were killed. The couple’s nine-year-old son was seriously injured. Veltman was also found guilty of one count of attempted murder.

She was the worst attack on Canadian Muslims since 2017, when a man opened fire and killed six people at a Quebec mosque. Veltman had pleaded not guilty to the charges and his lawyer, citing psychological problems of his client and the fact that he used hallucinogenic mushrooms, he asked that the indictment be amended and that he be tried for negligent homicide.
