Cannes Film Festival 2021: all the stars on the red carpet, between “vacinade” and controversy

It was feared that the carousel of pads and green passes would affect the joyful atmosphere that has always been breathed on the Montée des Marches, but the first day of Cannes Film Festival 2021 confirmed that the glitter of the red carpet remained the same as ever. Spike Lee, the first black jury president in 74 editions of the Festival, paraded along with his fellow jurors – including Maggie Gyllenhaal, of which we will see soon The Lost Daughter, taken from the book by Elena Ferrante – with a decidedly flashy fuchsia suit for the presentation of Annette, the opening film of Cannes, Leos Carax’s punk musical starring Marion Cotillard, Adam Driver and Simon Helberg, namely the Howard of The Big Bang Theory, which did not fully convince the press. The film, dedicated to the love of a soprano and a stand-up comedian and the birth of their first daughter, was judged by some to be narcissistic and sometimes snooty but, on the other hand, if there were no controversies, what would Cannes be?

More than the films, however, to attract attention are, as always, the stars overlooking the Croisette to the delight of the fans, photographers and, this year, also vacationers (the fact that Cannes moved from May to July due to the pandemic meant that the city was more overrun with tourists than in spring). Together with the discontent for the lack of interviews granted by Cotillard, to raise the mood they thought, among others, Carla Bruni, the very sensual and elegant dress by Bella Hadid, the complicit glances of Jodie Foster, awarded with the Palme d’Or for Lifetime Achievement, and his wife Alexandra Hedison, the emerald and diamond necklace of the “Vacinada” Helen Mirren and the fluffy and leonine hair of Andie McDowell. Together with the tight and provocative outfit of the former angel of Victoria’s Secret Candice Swaneapoel, Nicolas Maury, the protagonist of the series, also got noticed Call my agent!, who presented himself with a gender fluid look between headbands and earrings, the wonderful one Jessica Chastain and the bulky necklace worn by Chopard co-chair Caroline Scheufele.

We are still at the premiere, the Cannes Film Festival is heating up and, in fact, reinforcements arrive immediately. Chiara Ferragni has arrived a few hours ago to promote his capsule collection together with Nespresso, as well as Pedro Almodovar and Bong Joon-oh, who in September will chair the jury of the competing Venice Film Festival. Meanwhile, first of all the films we will see in the next nine days, including the Italians – Three floors by Nanni Moretti e Marx can wait by Marco Bellocchio, who will receive the prestigious Palme d’Honneur -, Cannes starts again with a few parties, continuous salivary tests, human snakes wedging in the screening rooms and in the vaccination center on the Montée side and a resounding word in the corridors and the conversations of the employees at work and not: restart.
