Carbs or fats? See the best option for a healthy breakfast

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Waterloo, Canada, shows that men and women should adopt two different breakfast styles. For them, the ideal is to start the day with a meal centered on carbohydrates; for them, preference should be given to a dish rich in fat.

The research, published in Computers in Biology and Medicineis based on a mathematical model that allowed simulating the effect of food choices on the metabolism of men and women. The initial idea was precisely to explain the differences in how men and women process fat, since the scientific literature offers little data on female dietary health and is focused, above all, on men.

Despite also storing more fat in their bodies, women also tend to burn it faster, as noted by Anita T. Layton, lead author of the study and professor of applied mathematics, computer science, pharmacy and biology at the University of Waterloo.

“Fat is a good source of energy, which is necessary to reach the nutritional levels required by pregnancy and breastfeeding,” he explained in an interview with Medical News Today. “These sex differences are caused by estrogen.”

As the study suggests, choosing your breakfast well can be crucial to boosting your metabolism, as differences between the sexes are more pronounced precisely after short periods of fasting, such as the one before breakfast.
