Carioca bookie José Carlos Escafura, known as Piruinha, was arrested in Rio de Janeiro, this Tuesday (24), during a joint operation between the Civil Police and the Public Ministry (MP-RJ).
In addition to the 93-year-old offender, his personal security, military police officer Jeckson Lima Pereira, known as Jeck, was also arrested. The operation also has a warrant issued for a third person, who is still wanted by the authorities.
In total, the operation also involves 20 search and seizure warrants.
According to the MP-RJ, the arrests are due to the investigation into the murder of Natalino José do Nascimento Espíndola, known as Neto, who was killed in July last year.
“According to the investigations, on July 23, 2021, the accused Jeck, Piruinha’s personal security, fired a firearm that caused Neto’s death”, reported the MP-RJ.
“The crime of murder was committed for a clumsy motive, since the victim was executed as a form of punishment for not having paid the money debt he had with the intellectual authors of the crime, criminals in the city of Rio de Janeiro,” he added. .
The crime allegedly took place on the Intendente Magalhães road, which connects the neighborhoods of Madureira and Campo dos Afonsos, while the victim was heading to the vehicle store he owned.
The MP-RJ highlights that the region is densely populated, which puts the physical integrity and lives of other people at risk.
“Piruinha is a notorious offender in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and for decades he has been dominating the animal game that is exploited in several regions of the city, especially in the neighborhoods of Madureira, Abolição, Cascadura, Maria da Graça, Piedade. and Inhaúma, among others”, states the MP-RJ.
“Piruinha also leases other areas for the exploitation of gambling to other offenders, among them the borders with the districts of Cascadura, Piedade, Pilares, Abolição, Quintino, Campinho and the border with Praça Seca”, he concludes.
