International Relations professor Kai Enno Lehmann commented, in an interview with CNN this Friday (9), the expectation for the pronouncement to the nation that should be made by King Charles III this afternoon.
“Charles III has to show that he is capable of calming the country,” he said. The expert pointed out that the United Kingdom is going through a difficult period economically due to the war in Ukraine.
“He [Charles III] needs to show himself as the father of the nation at this time. He has to find his style [como rei] very quickly,” he added.
The new head of state made his first public appearance during tributes to Queen Elizabeth II on Friday. In addition to contemplating the flowers and messages left in front of Buckingham Palace, the monarch greeted the people who were there.
According to Lehmann, the monarch needs “to show a certain humility to relate to the people in the face of the history he has in people’s minds”.
“Charles III doesn’t have that facility for relating to the common people as the Queen did, or at least demonstrated.”
Despite this, the professor stressed that Charles III “is very prepared for this moment”.
