The Met Gala is fashion’s big night — and celebrities have been known to save their most striking outfits for the often theatrical red carpet.
The rescheduling associated with the pandemic means it’s been less than eight months since the stars last descended on the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the annual fundraiser, giving designers less time to think about the event’s dress code, which was themed “Gilded Glamor and White Tie”.
The theme aimed to continue the exploration of American style in 2021, in line with the two-part exhibition “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” by the Costume Institute.
In the press booth before the gala, First Lady Jill Biden delivered her opening remarks at the Met, emphasizing the “rich and deep” history of American design.
“It’s a story of innovation and ingenuity, of rebellion and renewal,” she said. “It’s often been written by those in the shadows, unrecognized for their influence and artistry, but here at the Met their stories are told. Their voices are raised and their work can shine.”
Ahead of Monday night’s red carpet, one of America’s quintessential designers, Tommy Hilfiger, whose work appears on the show, told CNN that the event offered designers a chance to “show off their unique interpretations of fashion and pop culture”.
“I’m always looking forward to seeing how designers interpret the theme with their own creativity, identity and flair, and I’m sure this year will be no exception,” Hilfiger said via email.
“The Met Gala is all about being open-minded and thinking outside the box.”
For former Yeezy designer Maisie Schloss, who now runs her own Los Angeles-based brand called Maisie Wilen, the combination of high fashion and mainstream appeal makes her a “unique” red carpet.
“Events embraced by both industry insiders and the masses allow for a peak of creativity,” she said via email, adding, “I hope guests bring out her more decadent yet playful appearance.”
